I was on a recent trip for business to NYC and squeezed in some photography. OK, maybe it was the other way around, where I squeezed in a little business... you know what I'm talking about.
I brought with me my M6TTL and Rolleiflex. Into the second day of shooting my rewind knob got bent and wouldn't advance or rewind film without mashing the teeth on the film. I was sitting on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade waiting for my business meeting to start and thought, "Hey, I've got an iPhone, I can solve this!!!!" I called B&H Photo but didn't get through to anyone. Ping ponged through all the extensions. I hung up. I sent a plea for help via Facebook and Guido Steenkemp, a Flickr friend and contact in Berlin, responded within minutes with a few suggestions. He recommended B&H and a place in NJ. Can you believe this? Berlin is halfway around the world and Guido is a person I've never met face to face... yet! I did some more digging and research on www.photo.net and Googled "Leica Camera Repair in NYC" and found Nippon Photoclinic. I wasn't sure about their reputation and didn't want to hand my Leica over to just anyone. I Googled any satisfaction ratings I could find. I called them and brought my M6TTL to them after my business meeting. They said they'd try to get it done by the next day. So I went out and shot with my Rolleiflex for the rest of the day. Not a bad day. I called them in the morning and they said, "Bad news, the part hasn't come in yet. Check back in an hour." Called them in an hour and the response, "Come down and pick up your camera, it's fixed!" They found a brand-new rewind mechanism on the shelf and fixed it. Great response and the rewind is working so smoothly again. I'm happy to have it back and didn't have to leave it in NYC. I highly recommend them if you find yourself in NYC with a Leica that needs repair. They also fix other cameras as well. A woman came in with a Canon 5d Mark II. Her mirror fell out. Thanks again Guido for your help!!! Best, Gary
